The Arch Company has struck a deal with Asda to take on two of its units in Norton Street, Salford. The supermarket is the first business to confirm space within this row of arches that are set to receive enhancement works. These will begin in summer 2024 to bring them back into use for spring 2025.

Located within 8 minutes’ walk from Salford Station, the new Asda store will open in 2025, once the improvement works have completed. The run of ten arches will receive £3.7m investment from The Arch Company to create modern spaces for a variety of new businesses to thrive within, including leisure and retail. This will generate economic benefits and help to support the creation of jobs for the local community.

The Asda Express store will bring Asda’s heritage in delivering outstanding value to customers in the Salford area, with products including a comprehensive selection of fresh, ambient, and chilled groceries.

In addition to groceries, the new Asda Express will feature a selection of hot and cold ‘food for now’ options from Asda, as well as a Costa coffee machine. For those looking for ‘food for later’ choices, the store will offer ready meals and a selection of £10 meal deals for two people, making it easier than ever for residents to enjoy convenient and delicious meals.

Joanne Cruickshank, Head of Leasing, Regions at The Arch Company, said:

“We’re excited to confirm Asda as the first customer to join our Norton Street arches, and wish the new store every success. It’s our third deal with Asda so far, and we hope to continue this partnership.
“These arches are set in a prime location, and we look forward to welcoming many new businesses in the future. We anticipate demand to be strong and encourage anyone interested in letting these spaces to get in touch.”

An Asda spokesperson commented:

“We’re excited to be bringing our Asda value and quality to more customers with the launch of this new store. This new Asda Express will be well placed to meet the needs of customers, whether that includes ‘top-up’ shops, lunch on the go, or scratch-cooking essentials.
“The continued rollout of Asda Express stores marks an incredibly exciting moment for our business, and we look forward to bringing our heritage in uncompromising value to more communities as we accelerate our presence in the fast-growing convenience market.”

Works on Norton Street will commence in summer 2024, with anticipated completion of spring 2025. Improvements will include new glazed frontages, new services and drainage, internal lining to make the spaces dry and ready for occupation, and a large outdoor seating area. The investment forms part of Project 1000, The Arch Company’s £200m development plan to bring a thousand empty or derelict spaces into use across England and Wales by 2030.
